Read this before you use it in a bio
These are not fonts. They are Unicode symbols shaped like letters, which has three consequences most generators do not mention: screen readers announce them character by character or skip them entirely, so your bio becomes unreadable to anyone using assistive technology; platform search generally will not match styled text against a plain query, so a styled name can drop out of search; and some styles render as empty boxes on older devices.
Reasonable use: one styled word for emphasis in a caption. Risky use: your whole bio, your business name, or anything you want found.

These are not fonts
Instagram has no font picker. What every generator including this one does is substitute your letters for Unicode characters that happen to look styled โ mathematical alphanumerics, enclosed letters, phonetic glyphs.
That works, and it is why the text survives a copy and paste. But it means the characters are not letters as far as software is concerned, and three things follow from that.
What it costs you
A screen reader reads mathematical bold โhโ as โmathematical bold small hโ, or skips it. A bio written entirely in a styled font is unreadable to anyone using assistive technology.
Platform search matches plain text. A styled business name can stop appearing when someone searches for it, which is an expensive way to look stylish.
Older Android builds render some of these as empty boxes. You will not see it on your own phone.
How to use it without the downside
One styled word inside an otherwise plain caption is fine โ it draws the eye and the rest of the text stays readable and searchable. A styled divider between sections of a bio is fine for the same reason.
Your handle, your business name and the first line of your bio should stay plain. Those are the parts people search for and screen readers announce first.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my styled text show as boxes on some phones?
- The device has no glyph for that Unicode codepoint, so it falls back to the missing-character box. It is most common with Fraktur and script styles on older Android builds. Monospace and outline are the most reliably rendered.
- Does styled text hurt my reach?
- There is no evidence a platform penalises it directly. The real cost is indirect: search does not match styled characters against plain queries, and screen readers cannot read it. Both narrow who can find and use your profile.
- Why is the character count higher than what I typed?
- Strikethrough and underline add a combining mark to every character, which roughly doubles the count. Instagram bios cap at 150, so a styled bio hits the limit much sooner than a plain one. The count next to each style is what the platform sees.
- Can I use this for my username?
- Instagram usernames accept only letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, so styled characters are rejected. You can use them in your display name, which is a separate field - but that is also the field search uses.
